A MAJOR road remains closed following an fuel tanker fire at the Sadler’s Farm roundabout.

Canvey Way is still shut coming on off the Island following the huge 30-40 ft fire last night.

The incident occurred just after 5pm yesterday evening when a tanker, which was carrying 38,000 litres of aviation fuel, was completely alight.

It took eight fire crews to tackle the inferno.

Emergency repairs are now being carried out after the blaze, and it is still unknown when the road will re-open.

All other roads in the area, apart from Canvey Way, have since re-opened overnight.

Essex Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze damaged the road, traffic lights, and streetlights at the roundabout.

Neil Fenwick, area director, said: “The fire has now been extinguished but we will remain at the scene as long as necessary to monitor the situation and make sure the fire remains out.

“I would like to thank the public for being supportive while our crews worked to put the fire out, and I would like to thank Essex Police and East of England Ambulance Service for their cooperation at the scene.

“Incidents of this nature really demonstrate the importance of close working relationship between emergency services.”
