HIGHWAYS bosses have issued an update on the repair work for a major road after it was closed for three days following a huge tanker fire.

Canvey Way was reopened on Saturday after it had been shut since about 5pm on Wednesday due to the oil tanker blaze at Sadlers Farm roundabout in Benfleet.

However, at the time, Essex Highways warned drivers the damaged traffic lights would be replaced on Monday.

Now, bosses have issued an update informing motorists the road has been fully restored.

A spokesman for Essex Highways said on Twitter: "Our teams worked over the bank holiday to keep motorists safe and restore access quickly.

"Thank you to the crews for the short time it took to repair the damage.

"Our crews worked with the police, supply chain partners and Environment Agency to manage local traffic, make damaged lighting columns and bollards safe, secure and clean the watercourse, gullies and surrounding ponds, clear debris and resurface the damaged area of road."

Eight fire crews tackled the blaze last week which damaged the road, leaving residents cut off for the following days as emergency repairs took place.

Pauline Edwards told BBC Essex her husband was experiencing severe delays in making a simple journey.

She said: “It took him a total of an hour to get from our house to Benfleet station and of course there was still more problems because there are road works in Benfleet as well.

“It is a nightmare; it then took an hour and 20 minutes to get from ours to the edge of South Wooden Ferrers.”
