The following letter was published in the Echo last week:

A tanker fire at Sadler’s farm and a crash on the A127 have been used as excuses to demand millions more be wasted on building new roads in our corner of Essex.

But councillors and MPs have tried this failed policy for decades, refusing to accept the inevitable that we all need to use our cars a lot less, making the shift to walk, cycle and public transport.

The truth is that politicians have inflicted a vicious blow upon the young, condemning them to the never-ending crisis of climate breakdown.

We now know we will lose thousands of homes in Essex to sea level rise by 2050 and food supplies will be seriously disrupted.

It is time for politicians to apologise to the young and now deliver real solutions – better public transport and cycle routes.

For Canvey that also means new pedestrian and cycle paths at the west and north of the Island. When the entire Island is eventually flooded we can’t evacuate people by car.

Ready for that emergency we will need new pedestrian & cycle paths to the west and north of the island.
