A NUMBER of people have been left homeless after a bedroom fire in Basildon.

Firefighters were called to the incident at approximately 2:59 yesterday following reports of a fire in a mid-terrace property.

Crews from Basildon, Corringham, Orsett and Rayleigh extinguished a bedroom fire in Beambridge Place, Basildon.

Due to the damage cause by the fire, several people have been left temporarily homeless.

An investigation in now under way to establish the cause.

Mark Elliott, station manager, said: "Our Control teams did a brilliant job of getting crews to the scene quickly.

"I'd like to praise Watch Manager Steve Allen and the crews for working hard in arduous conditions and containing what was an intense fire to the bedroom.

"I'd also like to thank Essex Police and UK Power Networks for working with us so closely.

"Thankfully, the property had working smoke alarms which alerted the occupants, and they did exactly the right thing: they got out, stayed out and called 999."
