A popular American-inspired restaurant and bar in Southend is closing after 16 years.

Mangetout is a much-loved family run American-inspired restaurant and bar in Southend city centre.

Bosses have made the shocking announcement today that the restaurant is moving into retirement after 16 years.

A spokesman for the restaurant revealed the news on Facebook, saying: "After an incredible 16 years, our family has decided that now is the time for Mangetout to turn off its grills, put down its cocktail shakers and move into retirement.

"It has been an absolute pleasure to serve you over the years and enjoy in sharing the best of times with you all."

Mangetout has served customers in different venues across its time in the city.

It moved to Tylers Avenue - the former home of Churchill’s nightclub - from their former home in Chichester Road in 2015 to cope with increasing demand.

In recent years it moved to its current home in the “restaurant strip” of Southend – London Road, near the top of the high street.

The spokesman continued: "We want to say the biggest thank you to every customer that has walked through our doors since the days of 'Little Mangetout', right up to where we are now.

"Without you, our business would not have achieved as much as it has, and we are forever grateful."

Despite the sad news, bosses promise an "exciting new concept" will be launching on its site after they are gone, the details of which will be shared soon.

The restaurant doors will stay open until Sunday, July 16.
