A number of bank branches across south Essex are shutting their doors this year as bosses see a fall in in-store customers.

Barclays Bank in Leigh Broadway is the latest to reveal its closing its doors.

The branch will shut on September 9 as the firm is closing a number of its branches across the country.

Barclays has revealed it would be closing a total of 40 banks this year, with 27 announced last month and 13 in March.

The bank is just one among many big firms which are leaving high streets across the county as bosses claim they've seen a dramatic fall in the number of customers coming into branches.

Here are all the other south Essex bank branches which are set to close this year (so far):

Barclays, Natwest and HSBC in Billericay

Billericay's High Street branch is another one of the 27 which Barclays revealed last month would be closing this year.

It will close on Wednesday, August 24, and will be the third bank to close in the town's High Street this year.

The HSBC in the high street will be closing in September and NatWest is set to shut later in the year too, although bosses hadn't revealed when.

All three had said at the time that they are seeing a sustained fall in branch visits across the UK, resulting in closures.

Lloyds in Hadleigh

Hadleigh is losing its last remaining bank after Lloyds announced widespread closures of branches across the UK.

The branch in London Road is among 20 which will be closing down later this year.

This means the nearest bank to the town will be the Lloyds branch in Rayleigh High Street - three miles away.

The branch is closing on September 14.

Natwest in Leigh

Leigh Broadway is also losing its Natwest branch alongside the Barclays, due to fewer people coming into the bank.

The group says between 2017 and 2019 counter transactions for personal customers have decreased by 15 per cent and was used by just 13  personal customers on a regular basis in 2019.

Southend West MP Anna Firth slammed the decision, saying it would affect businesses and charities in the area.

The Natwest branch in Leigh will close on August 31.
