PLANS have been unveiled to install a huge new viewing platform and wheel - similar to the London Eye - at one of Southend seafront's top attractions.

Southend Council is bidding to secure Government funding for the spectacular attraction set to be built on land owned by Adventure Island.

It is understood the new wheel will be called the Southend Eye.

Council bosses are aiming to secure the cash via theGovernment’s Levelling Up Fund, which is boosting and supporting projects and investment in towns and cities across the country.

Councillors were given a briefing on the plans on Monday night and say the major new attraction's design will be similar to the London Eye.

Ian Gilbert, Labour councillor responsible for economic recovery, regeneration and housing said: “I think it will be a good attraction and although it’s not quite the size of the London Eye, but we are looking at a significant scale.

“It’s also being partly funded by Stockvale, the owners of Adventure Island.”

Tony Cox, leader of the Southend Conservatives, added: “It’s based on the principle of the London Eye.

"I think it will be a good addition to the seafront and will be iconic.

“I also think it will draw in lots of people too and will be a fantastic new attraction on our seafront.”

Residents and business bosses have also welcomed the plans.

Joan Tiney, 70, owner of The Borough Hotel on Southend seafront said: “I understand it’s due to be constantly moving like the London Eye does. I think it will be a good thing for the seafront.

“It’s going to be quite big, from what I have heard and understand so far.

"I think the more attractions that offering something different the better really.

"I also think it will be popular and a big draw for our seafront.”

Westcliff resident Adam Ball, 47, of Shakespeare Drive said he will want to try out the attraction and enjoy the views of the city and estuary.

He said: “I think it will be great and will be a game changer for the seafront and city.

"Something that size is a huge deal for Southend and the seafront.

“You will be able to get great views and I very much look forward to that.”

Stockvale, the owners of Adventure Island were contacted for comment.
