Southend artists are being asked to submit bold and innovative designs for the city's upcoming lights festival - with a £10,000 grant available.

The city's LuminoCity festival is set to return next year and will brighten up the winter sky from February 16 to 18.

Southend Council and Southend Tourism Partnership are working together to bring back the hugely successful light festival which attracted more than 200,000 visitors.

For Southend LuminoCity 2023, a grant of up to £10,000 will be available to emerging light artists in the area to produce a new, unique installation which will amaze festivalgoers and showcase the city’s creative talent.

Artists are asked to submit proposals for bold and innovative designs to be produced to compliment the city centre’s architecture and infrastructure.

The commission must be illuminated, bold, innovative, large-scale, weather resistant and robust.

The submissions will be judged by Southend Tourism Partnership board members.

Entries will need to show that they have considered areas including visitor experience, quality, budget, and project management.

Carole Mulroney, councillor responsible for environment, culture and tourism, said: “The first Southend LuminoCity in February was such an amazing event and brought many visitors to the City.

"I’m excited to replicate this success and what is going to make next year’s event even more special is the opportunity for local artists to showcase their work, so that we can highlight Southend’s creative sector with this specially designed commission.”

Jacqui Dallimore, chair of the Southend Tourism Partnership, said: “Southend has so many wonderful artists and we’re excited to work with them to create an installation unique to Southend.

"Southend Tourism Partnership is committed to raising Southend’s profile and putting on events that will bring residents and visitors to the City, boosting the local economy.”
