SLEEPLESS residents are still being kept awake at night by inconsiderate yobs using the Pitsea flyover as a race track after plans to crackdown on the issue were delayed.

For many years, people living near the flyover say their lives have been plagued by noise created by boy racers.

On Monday, Church Park Road resident Ryan Gordon filmed from his window as the squealing of tyres and revving of engines kept him awake at 11pm.

“These racers have been keeping me awake for last six months now,” the 33-year-old said.

“I cannot stand it any longer. They are up there racing from 11pm late into the night. Sometimes they are still going at 2am.”

“Us residents have been suffering for ages now, the noise is a real pain for us,” he added.

The issue has been one residents have complained about for many years, and from July 1, new powers – which were ratified by the council back in October – will finally be handed over to police and council officers to force the drivers to pack up and move on.

Previous council documentation had claimed the order would come into force on April 1, but councillor Craig Rimmer says a three-month probationary period was required to allow legal challenges to emerge before officers were given the green light to crackdown on the boy racers.

“It had to be left for a while so if there are any objections, they can be taken into account,” Mr Rimmer said.

“Because you are introducing new powers into the public realm the public have a right to come forward and object. It is just doing that due process, and then it comes into effect.”

He added: “Once the actual PSPO comes in on July 1, I am confident the issue will be stomped out.”

The PSPO will give council enforcement officers and police the power to demand troublemakers disperse or face a £100 fine.

The order outlaws drinking in certain parts of the borough, as well as pony trapping and the use of any motor vehicle or E-scooter in 14 public parks.

Repeat offenders may face a £1,000 fine and summoned to court.
