Essex Police has issued advice to drivers for a safe summer day out as temperatures soar and the county faces extreme heat.

Officers are urging motorists to make sure they are prepared for the hot weather before they set off on their journey.

Launching the force's Summer Road Safety Essex campaign, Adam Pipe, head of roads policing, said: “More of our residents will be taking to the roads in this glorious weather to enjoy the seaside, parks and tourist attractions as a welcome break during the schools’ summer holidays.

“We take our cars for granted, and most times they won’t let us down, but we need to look after them in the extreme heat so they don’t pose a danger to you and your family.

“I would ask that you check your car is in tip-top condition before you head off to avoid breakdowns and make sure you and your passengers don’t fall ill on your day out. Carrying a bottle of water in your car could be a lifesaver.”

Here is Essex Police's five top tips for a safe day out:

  • Be prepared before you set off - have lots of water to drink and a first aid kit to hand, remember any medication you might need. Always take more water and snacks than may be needed to prevent anyone falling ill
  • Never, ever leave a child or animal alone in a car when the temperatures are hot, not even for a few minutes
  • In extreme temperatures your car’s components should be working to keep you safe and prevent the engine overheating - top up oil and water, check your battery and air-conditioning works and replace worn tyres for better road grip to ensure a safe journey
  • Keep your vehicle cool - use air-conditioning or open windows, park in a shady area , cover the steering wheel and seats with a towel
  • Keep control of your car to avoid a crash - wear sunglasses, make sure your windscreen wipers work, top up washer fluid to keep a clear screen, don’t let dead insects block your view
