A number of people have been arrested.

Dispersal orders give officers the power to direct anyone they suspect of causing disorder or anti-social behaviour away from a particular area.

Anyone who does not follow that direction could be arrested.

Inspector Andrew Jopson, from Essex Police, said: “The order has been put in place to ensure the safety of everyone in the city centre this evening by minimising the opportunity for crime and antisocial behaviour to be committed.

“We want everyone in our city centre to be able to enjoy it and that’s why we’re using the tools available to us to tackle those coming to our city believing they can engage in crime and antisocial behaviour.”
