ALMOST £4,000 has been raised to support the family of a teenager who died in a motorbike crash in Billericay, with the online fundraiser beating its target in less than 24 hours.

The 15-year-old has been named locally as Harley Griggs, following the crash in Rosebay Avenue at 12.30am on Sunday, with the community rallying around his family to raise cash.

The GoFundMe page was launched by friends and family on Wednesday night, and had raised more than £3,700 when the Echo went to print yesterday evening.

The fundraising page, launched by Jade Darien, reads: “On July 31, our friend’s 15-year-old son Harley sadly passed away after a tragic accident, and our wish is to offer his family not only support in this difficult time of loss but to also help raise funds for Harley’s funeral through this fundraising page.

“Harley was a big brother, a baby brother and in the last few years, he had also became an uncle to two beautiful boys, who he adored.

“This fundraising can in no way change what has happened and is only meant as financial support in this very difficult time.

“Any kind of donation is entirely voluntary and greatly appreciated and will go directly to their allocated funeral director and other expenses.

“We hope this fundraising page gives his family, friends and the community we live in the opportunity to show their support to Harley’s family.

“Thank you for all the support that has been given and offered; the family are truly grateful.”

Council bosses say they hope the fundraising gives the family some comfort.

Andrew Baggott, Tory leader of Basildon Council, said: “Any tragedy can tear a community apart or can see a community come together and show the best of it.

“When a community does come together like this it is bittersweet as it’s tinged with the tragedy.

“We must thank all those who have contributed to this and while it doesn’t alleviate the loss felt by the family I hope it does give them some comfort.

“Obviously my thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this time.”

Essex Police said at the time that paramedics were on scene but the motorcyclist, a 15-year-old boy, was pronounced dead at the scene.
