LIFEBOAT crew members will be dropped into the river at an open day for the RNLI.

The RNLI lifeboat station in Burnham-on-Crouch is bringing back its annual open day event this weekend.

The dunking stool is also making a return where if a member of the public manages to hit a target with a wet sponge, a crew member will be plunged into the river.

Food and drink and souvenir stalls will be available all day.

Maldon and Burnham Standard:

A spokesman for Burnham-On-Crouch RNLI said: “Our open day used to be an annual event but sadly due to Covid we haven’t been able to hold it for the last two years.

“We are now able to relaunch it and it will be bigger and better than before.

“It is an opportunity for the public to see behind the scenes and meet the crew.

“There will be demonstrations from the crew, our infamous dunking stool where a crew member sits in a stool over the river and children and grow-ups throw wet sponges at a target. If they hit the target the crew member will be dropped into the river.

Maldon and Burnham Standard:

“Both of our lifeboats will be on display plus, subject to operational needs, guest appearances from the all-weather lifeboat from Walton on the Naze, and the Coastguard.”
