MAJOR plans to convert a fireravaged bar into dozens of new homes have been unveiled.

Brodie Group and Daniel James Developments are behind the proposals to create 35 new homes at the site of Reids, in Laindon Road, Billericay.

The bar has remained shut ever since it was badly damaged in a fire on July 20.

Parts of the roof collapsed during the inferno, which saw flames engulf almost half of the building.

The conversion plans put forward would see a third storey added to building, along with a new construction of the same height.

Planning documents say the flats would come with 39 parking spaces.

Kevin Blake, councillor for Burstead, is supportive of the proposals.

He said: “As long as it’s sympathetic to the area and fits in I can’t see any major issues.

“Some residents may welcome this as know they have complained about noise and parking issues caused by the bar being there.

“I am also aware we cannot keep saying no to new developments and I can see the benefits of having flats there.

“It seems reasonable and my initial thoughts are we could see a lot worse there. If it creates housing for Billericay or borough people that’s a positive.”

Adam Ashead, Billericay Town councillor for East Ward, said: “In general, I support the principle and idea of using a brownfield site for development.

“I do not think there’s enough parking. I think for a lot of people it’s about striking a balance between meeting the housing need and having something that fits in.

“We need housing but it seems like a lot of building in that space.”

A spokesman for the developer suggested the plans were being considered before the fire hit Reids.

He said: “Informal discussions have taken place with the council over the last twelve months to be able to bring forward a well-designed scheme to provide high quality new homes on what can be seen as an underused area of the town.

“The bar is only closed at present because of the recent fire.

“We hope that the Council and community will support our plans and the homes will be available in the next 18 months.”

The owners of Reids were approached for comment by the Echo.
