An officer patrolling Southend and members of the public helped to save the life of a boy who had got into difficulty in the water off Southend seafront.

Police were called to concerns for the teenage boy’s welfare shortly after 2pm this afternoon, August 13.

Two officers were among those first on the scene and one officer waded into the water alongside members of the public in order to help pull the boy to safety.

At that stage, the boy was unconscious. Once on shore, he was left in the care of medics.

Thankfully, his condition has improved, and he is now safe with his family.

Chief Inspector Dan McHugh said: “The actions of our officer in wading into the water in order to help the boy show that she is more than just a crime fighter; our officers are there to help anyone who needs us.

“She thought nothing of her own safety and ensured the boy was pulled to safety as quickly as possible.

“I would also like to commend those members of the public who were also on scene. It is no exaggeration to say that they have helped save a young boy’s life today and they should be incredibly proud.”

Chief Inspector McHugh added: “My plea to the public in Southend this weekend is to please stay safe in and around the water. Often, the dangers of the water can go unseen until it is too late.

“Please look out for yourselves, your family and your friends over this weekend.”
