Officers are investigating an assault which took place inside a "busy" pub in Basildon.

Police were called to the Jolly Friar, in Whitmore Way, shortly before 10.20pm last night, Saturday August 13, to reports of an incident which left one man injured.

A man sustained facial injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment, where he remains.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

Officers arrived and a man aged in his 30s was arrested close to the scene on suspicion of GBH, assault and criminal damage.

He remains in custody for questioning.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is continuing today.

Detective Sergeant Matt Longden said: “We know this incident took place inside the Jolly Friar, which would have been quite busy at the time, which means numerous people will have witnessed it and perhaps the moments leading up to it.

“I’d like to thank those people who remained at the scene last night in order to give their accounts but equally we know some people who witnessed the incident are yet to speak to us.

“I would urge them to please come forward as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information about the incident, dash cam and doorbell footage of it or the moments leading up to it and after it, is urged to contact police as soon as possible.
