A FORMER pub landlady has launched her own coffee shop and bar to embrace booming Leigh’s cafe culture.

Cafe Vino, which started trading this week, offers something a bit different, owner Maz Handy said.

Maz, who was manager at the Smack in Leigh, had a vision to create a place where people can enjoy a nice coffee and cake, and a glass of fizz if they prefer.

She has been busy putting the finishing touches to the wine bar and coffee shop.

Located at 50 Elm Road, where the vegan store Fleur De Leigh used to be, it is in a prime location for shoppers and passers-by to come in and spend some down time.

“It has been a busy time getting everything ready and now we are very excited to have launched,” said Maz.

“The idea for the coffee shop and bar stemmed from times I spend with my mum and dad.

“They don’t drink, but I do, and I wanted somewhere we could comfortably sit and they could enjoy coffee and a slice of cake, and I could have wine, and we could relax together.

“I also see it as a place to head to for school mums after drop-off and at weekends a place a coffee in the morning which eases into a glass of wine later in the day.”

They serve a selection of cakes and open sandwiches and later some hot food like jacket potatoes.

“There is a small kitchenette there so we won’t be serving big meals butthere is anice selection of food on offer,” said Maz.

She has a wealth of experience managing successful hospitality businesses.

Maz worked for Greene King pubs including nine years as manager of the Smack in Leigh.

“I had worked for different pubs in London and only intended to stay a few years but now, nineyears later, I have a husband to-be, a nice house and a shop,”

reflected Maz.

“I took the plunge after talking to friend and decided on a wine bar and coffee shop.”

The venue has pretty shabby chic interiors and photography displayed on the walls.

Maz has team member Katie Cayless on hand to welcome customers.

Cafe Vino is open Monday to Wednesday from 9am to 5pm and Thursday to Saturday from 9am to 7pm.

“We will also be open for private functions so we can offer a lovely space to people looking to hire it outfor a special event."
