Students at Southend High School for Boys have set new records with their A-level results today.

It has been an impressive year for sixth form students at Southend High School for Boys, with its largest ever entry for A-level.

Almost 700 A-levels were completed with more A* to B grades than the school has ever secured.

Robin Bevan, Southend High School for Boys headteacher, said: "At Southend High School for Boys there is a sustained spirit of expectation for every student. Everyone shares in the delight of each individual success.

"Excellent teaching and a superb working atmosphere help dedicated students obtain record-breaking results at A-level.

"These grades provide Sixth Formers from Southend High School for Boys with the very best opportunities for university entrance and for their future careers."

More than half, 57 per cent, of all A2 results were at A or A* with 396 A/A* grades in total.

A total of 156 Year 13 students have been awarded A* grades and 78 students have achieved 3 or more grade As at A-level.

There are 20 students with three or more A* results at the school.

Lucy Quigley, 18, from Southend, received four A*s.

She said: "I am very pleased as you never know but I was hoping to get these results.

"My family aren't too happy as they promised me £50 for each A*. I'm going off to Cambridge University to study medicine and think I want to become a surgeon."

Grace O’Leary, 18, from Benfleet got three A*s. 

She said: “I maybe expected to get two but I am surprised about getting three. 

"I am very, very happy and I did work hard. I am going to Manchester University to study theology and philosophy. 

"I am hoping to do a year late conversion or maybe a journalism apprenticeship. I’ll be celebrating with friends and family."

Sharon O'Ryan, chair of governors, added: "Success at this outstanding level is a result of superb team-work. The students deserve our praise, not least for their determination and resilience.

"They have had the benefit of excellent teaching and fantastic opportunities: in the classroom and through remote learning.

"Our exceptional staff deserves credit too.

"At Southend High School for Boys, talent is nurtured and learning is valued. These results demonstrate, once again, how our students thrive in our school."
