A popular south Essex nature reserve's play area is set to close for almost a month while it is transformed.

Hockley Woods play space will be temporarily closed from Monday, September 5 while "some very exciting" new play equipment is intalled.

The play area will reopen on Tuesday, October 4.

Earlier this year Rochford District Council announced the popular play space would be transformed with new play equipment, scheduled to be in place by September.

This is thanks to more than £70k in funding, with £50k from Enovert Environmental and a £23k contribution from the local authority.

The play space will boast two new swings, a trim trail along with a large mangrove woodland themed multi-play unit and a new zip wire.

The improvements also include the addition of new picnic benches, complete with new waste bins.

Dave Sperring, Rochford District Council’s portfolio holder for the environment, previously said: “Hockley Woods park has always been a very popular venue for young families, and I’m sure these additions will be much appreciated and enjoyed by everyone.

“The play area, which leads onto the beautiful, ancient woodlands is a great spot for parents to take little ones to get some fresh air and burn off some energy. I look forward to seeing it full of smiling faces.”
