Dame Helen Mirren, who portrayed the Queen on the silver screen and on the stage, described the monarch as the “epitome of nobility” as more famous faces from around the world paid tribute to her reign and legacy.

The monarch has been fondly remembered as “an inspiration to the world for her lifetime of service” after her death, aged 96, was announced on Thursday evening.

In a post on Instagram, Dame Helen Mirren said: “I am proud to be an Elizabethan. We mourn a woman, who, with or without the crown, was the epitome of nobility.”

Dame Helen Mirren has previously spoken of her relief that she sent a letter to the Queen while she was shooting her 2006 film about the monarch.

Dame Helen, 76 who was raised in Leigh and went to St Bernard’s in Westcliff, said she had quickly realised she was dealing with a sensitive moment in the Queen’s life, as the drama focused on the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, and decided to contact her.

She told Radio Times: “I realised we were investigating a profoundly painful part of her life, so I wrote to her.

“I said: ‘We are doing this film. We are investigating a very difficult time in your life. I hope it’s not too awful for you’.

“I just said that in my research I found myself with a growing respect for her, and I just wanted to say that. I was very relieved subsequently that I had written that letter.”

The Echo is launching a book of condolences for readers and families to share their memories, thoughts and respects to The Queen. Click here to pay tribute.
