RSPCA officers were called to the site of a 663-home development in Rochford, following residents raising concerns that badgers and their setts were being displaced.

The animal charity was called to The Drive, in Rochford, and spoke to workers on the site as well as as residents who came out of their homes when the officers arrived.

The developer, Bloor Homes, has confirmed that RSPCA officers attended and claimed the officers were happy with the work taking place.

Campaigner Christine Austin, of Oxford Road, Rochford, said: “It’s the badger’s natural habit and it’s been taken from them.

“It seems the badgers have disappeared. I was very pleased the RSPCA attended and if there is anything untoward going on something needs to be done about it.

“These are poor defenceless animals and cannot fight back or do anything. Residents are very worried about the badgers - wildlife should be treasured.”

She added that some residents did speak with the RSPCA officers on the day and campaigners on the whole were pleased the charity attended.

Residents have protested against the plans since they were initially submitted, and have continued to do so since the proposal was given the green light by the Planning Inspectorate in March.

Last month, residents and councillors formed a picket line at the entrance to the site and attempted to block workers from gaining access.

A spokesman for Bloor Homes said: “We can confirm that the RSPCA came out to site, inspected the badger setts, and was happy with the measures being undertaken.

“We are working closely with the relevant authorities in all respects regarding the setts and have not undertaken any illegal activity or harmed any badgers, nor will we.

“Legislation protects badgers from reckless or intentional disturbance of their occupied setts and we are working in accordance with Natural England guidance in relation to disturbance of badger setts and licensing requirements.

“In addition, an ecologist is on site to ensure no harm occurs and guide the team, demonstrating our commitment to ensuring that no illegal offences occur.”
