Many readers will wince when they see the high number of BNP candidates among the nominations for local council elections in Southend, Basildon and Thurrock.

The far right party has been trying to get a foothold in south Essex for many years, with limited success.

However, each vote that goes its way adds credibility to the BNP's distorted view of Britain today.

The chances of the BNP winning even one seat across south Essex are pretty slim.

However, any increase in support for these extremists would send out a very worrying message. It should be remembered that in Thurrock last time round, the BNP took a very significant 25 per cent of the overall vote.

There is a real debate to be had about the level of immigration the UK can sustain. The mainstream parties have pussyfooted around the issue for too long, allowing the BNP to capitalise on people's fears.

The challenge to non-BNP candidates is to tackle the issues clearly and honestly as they arise on the doorstep. They may, of course, want to point out that any restriction on immigration comes from national government, not your local council.

Then it is down to the public.

The Echo should not suggest how people should vote. We make no apology, however, for fervently hoping south Essex sends the BNP packing.
