A new restaurant could be set to open in a south Essex town centre as plans have been unveiled.

Plans to transform 12 Southernhay in Basildon town centre into a restaurant have been submitted to Basildon Council.

It is unclear exactly what type of food the restaurant will serve, although a statement included with the application states it will provide "healthy grilled food", something the applicants say is "limited in the area".

A drawing submitted with the proposal suggests it could be a Pepe's Piri Piri restaurant.

The proposed restaurant also promises to provide a "family friendly dining experience" with 24 seats planned.

If approved , the restaurant could open everyday from 11am to 11.30pm.

The restaurant would also hire 15 full-time and part-time staff.

A statement included with the plans adds: "Being located in the town centre the site is close to many attraction sites and retail businesses.

"The proposal will provide healthy grilled food and dining facilities to Basildon residents and tourists visiting the town."

Basildon Council will have the final say on the plans.
