THE victim of a brutal robbery in Basildon town centre fears she is "lucky to be alive" after being attacked by a gang.

Detectives are continuing to investigate reports two woman in their 20s were assaulted and had their mobile phones stolen, as well as a purse, at 1.40am on Saturday morning.

Both victims suffered injuries to their heads and were taken to hospital for treatment.

Now, one of the victims has revealed she is frightened to go outside after the attack, and fears the incident could have been much worse if an elderly person had been targeted.

The victim, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “If I’m honest, I’m lucky, I’m glad to be alive, and I’m also glad it was me and not some innocent old pensioner.

"The whole time they were beating me and my cousin they were leaving someone else alone.

"I’m in complete and utter shock, that I can’t walk around my home town safe and sound.

"What was meant to be a nice night out, has turned into permanent reminder to never go out again.

"I have two toddlers and my cousin has a daughter who is also only two-years-old.

"The fact they could have killed us send shivers down my spine. I’m completely heart-broken that this is what today generation and society is about."

She added: "I’m still so confused, all I can remember is them shouting ‘I think we’ve killed her!’ that’s the last thing I remember before I went unconscious.

"That sentence is continuously circling my head day and night and it’s mentally draining.

"I am fully aware that I know I have to take some accountability for walking through the town centre at night.

"You read these things and you never think it could happen to you, until it does.

"I don’t fear a lot of things, but Saturday I feared for my life, and that’s something no one should have to do through.”

The gang that targetted the pair included three women and three men.

One of the women was described as having purple hair and the second was wearing orange clothing.

Some of the group were riding bikes.
