MORAG, or Mrs Jay as she is known to pupils at Hilltop Infant School, has worked with thousands of children in her 26 years as a volunteer.

She began working at the Wickford school when her first child, now 31, started there.

In the time she has been there, Morag had helped and encouraged the children with their learning and made a big impact on their lives.

“There was a notice up asking for volunteers and I decided to do it,” said the mother-ofthree who lives in Wickford.

“I love working with the children and have so many happy memories of being at the school.”

“I do whatever the teacher says needs to be done that day.

I help them with learning their phonics, simple maths and artwork,” she said.

“Helping the children in class gave me an insight into how things are done at school and allowed me to get my own children ready for school when the time came.”

Morag has been a fixture at the school for many years, adores the children, and enjoys helping them with their learning, especially creative art projects.

“I have been at the school a long time and it is nice for children to see a familiar face,” said Morag.

“Some children take a shine to you, cling to you, and waitfor you to come in each week. They are very sweet and it is a pleasure to see them progress with their learning.”

With more than two decades of insight Morag has seen some changes.

“Things do change over the years and that is how it goes, it’s progression. Over many years you get used to the rhythm of the school year, the events that come up like harvest and Christmas, and it is lovely getting to do extra artwork with the children and them being creative,” she explained.

“Christmas is a very special time and it lovely getting them ready for the school play and seeing them on stage is just magical.”

A spokesman for the school said: “Mrs Jay has been with us for 26 years which we think is amazing and it makes such a difference to the school to have such wonderful people who use their own time to sup
