Police are searching for the owners of a snake found in a field near Basildon.

Essex Police dog Kaiser was having a leg stretch in a field near Basildon yesterday when he came across the "new playmate".

Officers say it had been "abandoned" and are now trying to trace the owner.

The team joked that they considered the option of it being a new recruit, but say handlers "weren't keen".

A spokesman for the dogs section said: "Unusual find for PD Kaiser when he was having a leg stretch yesterday in a field near Basildon and sniffed out a new playmate that had been abandoned.

"We considered it could be a new recruit but handlers weren't keen so it's gone to a new home whilst we try and trace the owner."
