Many have wondered why securing new destinations is challenging for Southend Airport after disappointment over a lack of new easyJet routes next summer.

Last week, the airport revealed discussions are "aplenty" with airlines as it is working hard to secure new flights from Southend.

This came as easyJet will once again be flying to Faro, Malaga and Majorca from Southend throughout the peak holiday season in 2023.

However, passengers' hugly wished-for Alicante flights were not included in the airline’s 2023 summer schedule.

With no new destinations offered from the airport (yet), many passengers have asked: "Exactly why is it so difficult for Southend Airport to get flights to Alicante?"

Now, Southend Airport has answered the frequently asked question.

On its social media, a spokesman for the airport explained the challenges it is facing: "There are a few general explanations around why securing new destinations is challenging, but one of the key reasons is that we don't currently have any 'based' aircraft here at London Southend Airport."

This is an aircraft that is based at the airport, treating it as its home.

It will be there overnight, fly out from there and return at the end of the day.

This makes it easier for "based aircraft" to fly to certain destinations as they do not have to make extra stops along the way.

The spokesman added: "What's also worth noting is that easyJet, for example, don't have any based aircraft in Alicante.

"Which again means that their planes will end up elsewhere at the end of the day. Once again, adding an extra layer to the route/navigation.

"That's just one reason... and probably very poorly explained by me! But I hope that helps to explain a little bit about the challenges we're facing.

"We'll get there eventually! You can't hold off such a demand forever, but it's a lengthy process with all manner of hurdles to overcome."
