A SOUTHEND micropub owner says he would be “embarrassed” if his pub ever missed inclusion in the annual Good Beer Guide - after picking up the accolade for the seventh year in a row.

Mawson’s Micro Pub in Southchurch Road, Southend, has made the list, exalted among beer lovers, every year since opening in December 2015.

The venue, which serves a selection of real ales, beers and ciders - some of which are home-brewed - is a favourite among residents.

Owner Mark Mawson, 59, says he would be “embarrassed and upset” if they were to ever not be named on the CAMRA Good Beer Guide.

The CAMRA guide lists pubs that have impressed volunteer tasters who rate the establishments on their quality of beer, atmosphere, location, and ability to accommodate real ale drinkers.

Speaking after making the 2023 list, he said: “We hold ourselves to very high standards, have been on the list every year since we opened, and pride ourselves on serving unique and great beers.

“We’ve reliable, quality ale and that is what it is all about and that is why people love coming to drink at our pub.”

He added: “We also have the widest range in the city, because we are not tied to a large chain, we can order from any independent brewery we like.”

The pub is currently serving Rocquette cider, a rare drink created on a farm on the channel island of Guernsey.

It is only served in draft form in Guernsey, on nearby Jersey island, and in Mawson’s.

“I fell in love with the cider on a holiday in Guernsey and just knew I had to strike a deal to serve it at our pub,” Mr Mawson said.

Another current favourite up for sale is Siren Lumina, a gluten-free IPA brewed in Berkshire.

Mr Mawson, who was born in Rochford, first opened George’s Brewery in Great Wakering in 2010 after many years working as a brick layer.

He named the brewery in honour of his late father who had introduced him into real ale.

Six years later he expanded into Southend, opening Mawson’s.
