POLICE are investigating after a razor blade was “hidden inside a chocolate bar” and handed to a trick or treating youngster who was left with a cut mouth when she bit into the treat.

Tracey Pleydell took her 14-year-old daughter and a group of friends out on Monday night for a bit of Halloween fun in Laindon on Monday night.

However, the evening took a turn for the worse when the girl bit into a Curly Wurly chocolate bar and felt metal on her tongue.

The teenager was left with a cut on her lip from what appears to be a razor blade inside the chocolate bar.

The incident has been reported to police, with the force confirming an investigation is under way.

Ms Pleydell is now warning other parents to check their children’s candy after the “disgusting” and “dangerous” incident.

She said: “I am so shocked that anybody would do this.

“My daughter was upstairs eating her treats with her friends when I suddenly heard her scream and shout, saying there is something sharp in her chocolate.

“There was a razor blade in the chocolate which cut her bottom lip and left her bleeding.

“When I first heard her screaming, I thought she was trying to prank me, but then when I saw the blade, I felt sick to my stomach.

“Had she been a younger child and had this treat, the situation could have been even worse. It is so dangerous.

“I have no idea what possesses anybody to do something like this, especially targeting children.

“It is absolutely disgusting.”

A similar incident last year saw a 12-year-old approached by a masked man who handed her a chocolate while she was trick or treating.

When she ate the chocolate, she felt metal on her tongue and a small metal object was found inside the sweet.

Essex Police has urged anyone with information relating to the Laindon incident to get in contact.
