A BENFLEET grandmother was “left bruised and in shock” after being hit by a teenager riding an electric scooter at high speeds along the pavement.
Janet Barlex, 74, was walking down Rushbottom Lane, Benfleet, near the Aldi supermarket at about 6pm on November 1 when she was crashed into by the teenager in “all black clothing,” her daughter says.
Kirsty Spall, 42, says her mother has been left “shaken up” by the incident which left her badly bruised and in a state of shock.

“My mum had just crossed Louisa Avenue and just walked up a bit when the boy up from the lights on an electric scooter and rode straight into her left side,” Mrs Spall explained.
“She didn’t realise exactly what had happened to her at first, it was such a shock.
“She turned around and saw the boy careering off and nearly going in front of a car. He just looked at her then rode off,” Mrs Spall claimed.
Her mother carried on walking to try and catch the bus by Tesco express buthad to sit down as she felt sick due to the pains in her left arm.
“When she got home she checked her arm and she had a lump come up and it started bruising,” Mrs Spall said.
“She is shaken up by the whole thing. She sort of went into shock after, which I think is why she felt sick.
“He could have knocked her down and seriously injured her.”
Mrs Spall believes teenage E scooter riders are out of control in Benfleet.
“They don’t care about the people walking around, they think they can do whatever they want,” she said.
“Those scooters go so fast that one of these days it will end up killing someone with the impact of being hit.”
The family are appealing for anyone with information to come forward and help identify the culprit.
The incident was reported to Essex Police using the online portal.
The force says it will provide an update on its investigation into the incident once the report has been processed by its online system.
