SOUTHEND seafront’s new big wheel is taking shape with Adventure Island bosses confident it will be ahead for a grand launch during the festive period.

The new attraction, named The City Wheel, is currently being constructed at the seafront theme park, and is costing in the region of £1million.

The big wheel - which is set to be a hit with tourists and residents alike - is now visible across Southend’s skyline, with work taking place at a rapid rate after beginning last week.

Jonathan Garston, former Tory councillor said: “We’ve got to boost tourism and the city and it has altered the skyline.

“People will be very keen to come and see it and try out the new ride and it will attract lots of visitors.

“We’ve got to compete with out seaside towns and it’s great to see the investment and something different added to our seafront.”

In July bosses asked Southend Council for its opinion on the new attractions, with documents revealing that the big wheel will be 36 metres tall, and the drop tower will stand at 38.2 metres.

It was previously reported other rides at Adventure Island would be moved for the development, but bosses have confirmed there will be no changes to other attractions.

Philip Miller MBE, owner of Adventure Island said: “The wheel erection is going well last few sections are being put on the capsules should be going on before the weekend testing will be happening over this weekend which is our last this season.

“However we plan to have a grand opening at Christmas in time for our Winter Wonderland Experience. A nice present for all of our team and the town.

“By the time it’s all done there won’t be much change out of a million pounds. We have no doubt this will bring spin offs to the Hotels the High Street and Seafront. Not forgetting help fill the councils coffers with extra parking revenue!

“Southend City is going through the doldrums right now and hopefully this large investment might be the catalyst to set the ball rolling for others to follow?”
