CAMPAIGNERS demanding an end to austerity and the cost-of-living crisis will gather in their masses for a rally this evening.

Tonight, Southend’s Palace Theatre will play host to the national Enough is Enough campaign – with organisers expecting it to be the largest political rally the city has seen since the Poll Tax demonstrations in 1990.

Speakers will include Eddie Dempsey, assistant general secretary of the RMT, Dave Ward, general secretary of the CWU, and Labour MP Kate Osborne.

“Millions of people are facing low pay, insecure work, a lack of safe affordable housing, and spiralling utility bills which are totally out of control - this is nothing short of a national catastrophe,” Aston Line, Enough is Enough regional co-ordinator, said.

“Enough is Enough is a national campaign founded to push back against this cost-of-living crisis."

The campaign group held an inaugural Southend rally on October 1.

“At the top of our High Street, Southenders heard impassioned speeches against our country’s rapidly widening inequalities. Tonight, we will be hosting an even larger rally, at The Palace Theatre,” Mr Line continued.

“Local community voices will be joined by big-name national speakers, including Members of Parliament and Trade Union General Secretaries; as we demand a real pay rise for workers, a slash to energy bills, an end to food poverty, decent homes for all, and a policy of fair taxation for the mega rich.

“It is time to turn anger into action.”
