YOUNGTERS have been learning how to escape from fires, administer basic first aid and about the dangers of drink and drugs.

The Crucial Crew event was held at the Paddocks, Long Road, Canvey, and every Year 6 pupil in Castle Point is expected to take part in the sessions.

They are invited to tour ten different interactive scenarios, each designed to not only highlight different hazards, but also to give them the skills, knowledge and confidence to resist them.

Staff from Essex County Council, Castle Point Council, emergency services, Network Rail and other organisations acted out several scenarios for children to see how they normally reacted and what the correct action should be.

Ray Hatter, health promotions specialist for South East Essex Primary Care Trust, said: "They get an appreciation of what the risks are and the skills they need to try to reduce them.

"It's coming up to the summer holidays and also because the children are about to go up to secondary school, the dangers and the travelling becomes greater. So it is important for them to be prepared."
