THE Royal British Legion closed the doors at its Westcliff branch for the last time on New Year’s Eve, sparking an outpouring of sadness.

The closure was the result of the club’s financial position which has worsened due to the cost-of-living crisis and spiralling inflation.

In November, the committee which runs the club voted to dissolve the business.

The building in Northview Drive is owned by the national Royal British Legion.

Aston Line, councillor for Westborough, said: “I have only had the privilege of being a ward councillor for the past two years but in that short time I have seen just how great an asset the legion has been.

“It is deeply saddening that New Year’s Eve marked the last day of their business.

“On behalf of myself, councillor Anne Jones and mayor Kevin Robinson, I want to express our most sincere gratitude to all the staff and volunteers who have contributed so much over the years.”

The national organisation rents out the venue to the Westcliff branch and gives it permission to use the legion’s name and branding.

Mr Line also commended the Westcliff Royal British Legion staff for their hard work and love for the community.

He added: “I have been attending events at the Westcliff Royal British Legion since I was a young boy.

“Over the years I have been there for all sorts of events from birthday parties to wakes. We in the local Labour Party have regularly hired the venue.

“One of my undeniable favourite memories took place during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee when the Westcliff Royal British Legion hosted the Great Westborough egg and spoon race.

“All three Westborough ward councillors had a go, but Anne Jones and I were pipped to the post by mayor Kevin Robinson, who was humble in his victory.”
