BASILDON Council has unveiled plans for the redevelopment of the town centre post office block – check out the pictures below to see how it will look.

The plans include ground floor retail space – to be filled by a restaurant.

Details on how many homes have yet to be announced, but the Echo understands it will be between 52 – 64 flats across 11 storeys.

Basildon Council will be presenting proposals for the site to the public at drop in events on January 21, 21 and 25 at the Empire Cinema complex.

Official plans will be submitted for approval next month.

The council plans for construction to begin in September 2023 with a projected completion date set for 2025.

The council acquired the Post Office site – adjacent to the town’s new Empire cinema complex – in June 2019, before bulldozing the block.

Councillor Craig Rimmer, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, welcomed the news: "I am pleased that development of the Post Office site is progressing to create new high-quality homes in the heart of Basildon town centre.

Drop-in events to view the full plans will be held at Unit 3, East Walk (new Empire Cinemas development), Basildon, SS14 1HD, at the following times:

  • 10am to 2pm, Friday 20 January 2023
  • 10am to 2pm, Saturday 21 January 2023
  • 10am to 2pm, Wednesday 25 January 2023
