Firefighters are on the scene of a reported electrical blaze in Westcliff after a fault has occurred on an underground electricity cable.

Crews are on the scene of an incident at the Fairfax Drive end of Beedell Avenue.

According to witnesses on social media, the firefighters are responding to an "electrical fire".

UK Power Networks has confirmed there has been a power cut in the area.

A statement on the website says: "A fault has occurred on an underground electricity cable affecting the local area, we may have to dig up the road to carry out repairs."

They estimate the power will be back on between 10.30pm and 11.30pm tonight.

Resident Matt Cook told the Echo: "All I know is we were eating dinner when the lights in our front room started to flicker then the power went on and off several times, then went off completely.

"We then looked outside and saw the two fire engines. Fairfax Drive and Beedell Ave were cordoned off.

"The fire would appear to be out but it is still producing a lot of smoke. Both Beedell Ave and Ramuz Drive are without power."

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service have been contacted for comment.
