A MASSIVE pile of debris, furniture, wood and plastic was dumped in the middle of a road block it for at least 48 hours.

The waste was first reported in Magnolia Road, Rochford, on Sunday afternoon.

The pile - made up of a settee, an armchair, wooden planks, a tarpaulin, scrap plastic and garden waste - stood about five feet tall and ten feet wide, blocking most of the road until it was removed by the council on Tuesday afternoon.

Magnolia Road, most of which is a dirt path, is the only point of entrance to Rochford Hundred Rugby Club.

Christine Cole, 36, of Broad Walk, said: “Fly tipping is so common on this road, it seems to happen here all the time.

“It’s almost become a monthly occurrence. I think the council should consider installing CCTV along the road to put a stop to it.

“I think it's because it can be quite quiet when the club isn’t open for games, so they think they can easily get away with it.”

She added: “I think it happens around here because you cannot take a van to Rayleigh Recycling Centre.”

The nearest Essex County Council recycling centre that allows vans to drop off waste is Pitsea Recycling Centre.

Councillor Julie Gooding was alrted to the issue by frsutrated residents on Monday morning.

“It’s so annoying that people think they can do this," she said.

"I reported the waste to the council and their contractor to get it removed."

A Rochford Council spokesman said: "The council was made aware of the fly tip down Magnolia Road which was blocking part of the public right of way, we can confirm the waste has been cleared and the road is back in use.

"We would like to thank the public for making us aware and to remind our householders and businesses that Fly tipping is a serious criminal offence for which you can be prosecuted. It’s your duty to ensure that your waste is disposed of legally.

"Please do report any fly tipping on our website or call our customer services team on 318111 or 318191."
