Southend High Street shut off as crews rescue seagull

Firefighters cordoned off a section of the city centre, from the corner of Lloyds Bank opposite McDonald's, as a seagull was trapped on the bank's roof, it is understood.

Police also appeared to be on the scene assisting their fire service colleagues.

Witness Aaron Chesham says firefighters were called after the seagull got stuck on chicken wire on top of the High Street bank.

Crews were on the scene at around 12.45pm and reportedly had to cut the wire to free the seabird.

The Echo understands the seagull is now free, though its condition is unknown.

Essex Fire and Rescue Service have confirmed a crew was sent down to assist in the rescue.

South Essex Wildlife Hospital had called crews initially to help and will now be looking after the bird, a fire service spokesman says.
