A woman was allegedly "sexually assaulted" and five men "assaulted" in a Rayleigh High Street "disturbance."

Police were called to the incident in the town in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Officers say a 24-year-old man from Basildon has been charged in connection with the incident.

Cody Hurren, of Danbury Down, Basildon, is due to appear in Southend Magistrates' Court on April 11.

He's been charged with five counts of assault by beating and one count of sexual assault.

A spokesman for Essex Police - Rochford District said: "We were called to an incident in the High Street Rayleigh in the early hours of March 12 following reports of a disturbance.

"Upon arrival, officers established that five males had been assaulted during the incident and a female had been sexually assaulted.

"A 24-year-old man from Basildon was arrested at the scene and conveyed to custody.

"He was charged and bailed to court in April. He has bail conditions not to enter parts of Rayleigh, High Street, Eastwood Road, Websters Way and High Road for any reason or make contact with prosecution witnesses."

Editor's note: The charge of sexual assault was dropped by the prosecution when Cody Hurren appeared at Basildon Crown Court on June 14. He admitted five counts of assault against the men and was bailed to be sentenced at a later date.
