An inquest was opened this morning at Essex Coroners Court in Chelmsford. Ria Hill, coroners officer said: “The deceased is Scott Taylor who was 31 years old and died on August 13. On August 12 police to called and it was alleged Mr Taylor was being aggressive.

“He was restrained by police and security staff at the social club. He was taken to hospital and died there. A provisional cause of death was given of multi organ failure, rhabdomyolysis and complications arising from cocaine use involving pyshical exersion and prone restraint.”

Coroner Lincoln Brookes said: “I am opening the inquest into the death of Scott Taylor and adjourning the proceeding with no fixed date.

"Police have requested I suspend this, the IPOC and police are investigating and it seems to me things need to be resolved.”

Initially Essex Police said Mr Taylor was restrained on the floor while he was kicked to the face and hit with a chair, by members of the public, at the Winston Social Club in Northumberland Avenue.

Essex Police previously stated there was no casual link between the assault and the man’s death, after a post-mortem examination on August 15, was unable to establish the cause of death.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct investigated the officer’s handling of the situation, which saw Mr Taylor placed in handcuffs and leg restraints before being taken to hospital in a police car.
