FIREFIGHTERS raced to tackle a blaze in a flat near Southend Victoria railway station...but it was out by the time they arrived.

The alarm was raised last night when eyewitnesses reported there was a fire in the flat in Victoria Avenue.

Ambulance crews also attended.

The Essex Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed crews attended a flat fire yesterday evening, however, said it was out by the time crews arrived.

A spokesman said: "We did attend a flat fire at 6pm in Victoria Avenue but it was out on arrival and we didn't take any action.

"Two crews were sent to this."
