A Canvey drama group won the award for “best drama” at a prestigious amateur theatre competition.
The Cast and Crew Theatre Workshop, based on the island, won for their show “Love on the Beach”, directed by Zahna Hull, at the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) on Monday April 16.
The group attended the gala event, having been nominated for two plays in the category of best drama in their region.
The two nominated shows were “Family Spirit” and “Love on the Beach”.
The drama group are members of NODA and their performances are reviewed by critics who are theatre experts.

Sarah Lepley, group chairman, said: “It is very nice to be recognised by such a prestigious organisation.
“Our group has won many awards over the years and is a testament to all the hard work that this group puts into its productions.
“We perform in local community halls on Canvey as well as neighbouring Benfleet so it goes to show that you do not need to go to expensive theatres to see award-winning accessible shows”.
Established in 1999, Cast and Crew Theatre Workshop is an amateur dramatics group for people from Canvey and Castle Point. They focus on giving members the chance to take part in plays both on stage as actors and off stage as directors and technical crew.
The local group also raises money for good causes and since the start of 2011 have raised and distributed over £16,000.
The group are preparing for their next production The Hit Man, a Murder Mystery by Geoff Fulford which will be performed at St Nicholas Church Hall, Long Road, Canvey on Saturday July 15, at 2.45pm and 7.45pm.

They meet every Tuesday night at St Anne’s Church, St Annes Road, and welcome new members aged 18 and over. Rehearsal times are 7.30pm to 10pm every week.
As well as producing great shows, Cast and Crew has a thriving social network including visits to other local dramatic groups’ performances.
