The report, published today, stated: “Ineffective pest monitoring.

“Carry out an effective pest control treatment to adequately control mice.”

The food hygiene officer also raised concerns around the “poor food hygiene training and supervision”.

Issues cited include:

  • “Ineffective hand washing.
  • “Failure to wear suitable protective overclothing.”
  • “Ineffective cleaning of structure and equipment as well as ineffective cleaning / disinfection of reusable cleaning cloths.”
  • And a need to “address and rectify training issues.”

Rossi Ice Cream is an iconic seafront parlour located on the Westcliff seafront.

It was taken over in November by Rossi Ice Cream after they bought it back after 27 years.

In response to the findings, current owner James Sinclair said: “We only just bought the business, we owned the factory and brand, that makes the ice cream, which has the highest standards (5 stars and SALSA-accredited).

“Since taking over, we have trained and implemented our high standards into the business and retrained the team we took on.

“We are confident that on the next inspection; under our ownership, we will see marked improvements to the high-level Rossi demands.”

The scheme gives businesses a rating from five to zero, with five being hygiene standards are very good, and zero being urgent improvement is required.

The report overall stated there is a “major improvement necessary” for hygienic food handling, with “improvement necessary” for cleanliness and condition of facilities and building.

The management of food safety was found to be “generally satisfactory”.
