A BENFLEET primary school where pupils say it feels “like a second home” has received a glowing Ofsted report.

Inspectors visited Woodham Ley Primary School, in Rushbottom Lane, in March and have given it a good rating.

The report described Woodham Ley as a friendly school that pupils enjoyed attending as it felt like a “second home.”

It also stated everyone at the school understands the rights to learn with respect and safety.

The report said: “This helps pupils to feel safe. Bullying is rare.

Pupils can share concerns, worries or problems in different ways.

“They trust adults to help them sort out any problems.”

Teachers at Woodham Ley also received praise for helping the children work by themselves and keep trying when things are difficult.

In particular, the report highlighted Woodham Ley’s curriculum, saying that their construction helps pupils build knowledge from the early years to Year 6.

The report added: “Teachers plan activities that help pupils to practise using important knowledge so that they remember it.

“They help pupils to build successfully on what they already know, to understand more complex ideas.”

Ofsted found in some subjects, school leaders have not identified the most important knowledge pupils need to know and remember.

The inspector found this meant pupils develop a deeper understanding in some subjects than others.

Furthermore, the report found leaders have not ensured the school’s teachers put curriculum plans into effective action.

As a result of this, leaders are uncertain whether every pupil at Woodham Ley has the opportunity to learn the intended knowledge.

The report also praised the school’s strong emphasis on reading.

It said: “Pupils begin their reading journey in nursery, listening carefully to chosen stories and rhymes. In reception, children quickly build upon this and learn to read words and sentences.

“They read books matched to the sounds they have learned, practising their reading so that they read confidently with expression and understanding.
