AVIATION fans will be treated to a thrilling experience at Southend Airport on Father’s Day, with the iconic Vulcan aircraft opening its doors and a Spitfire gracing the skies for a special event.

The XL426, lovingly cared for by the Vulcan Restoration Trust, took up permanent residency at the airport in 1984.

Since then many events have given people the chance to get up close and admire the ex-RAF bomber, including last month when the jet thundered down the runway to mark 80 years since the Dambusters raid during the Second World War.

The hangar’s doors will slide open once again for visitors from 10am to 4pm on Sunday, offering another chance to wander around and feel its power and majesty, while marvelling at its imposing size and historical reference.

For an extra charge, guests can take their experience to new heights by stepping foot into the plane’s cockpit to get a glimpse of the controls that once powered the Vulcan.

This will take place every 15 minutes on a timed ticket basis, meaning there will be no queue.

Subject to serviceability, operational conditions and weather, the attendees’ experience will be fuelled with even more excitement as the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire will be taking to the skies with a flypast.

Vulcan-themed gifts, such as model aircrafts, clothing and collectibles, are to be sold, allowing spectators to take home a piece of aviation history.

Hot and cold beverages will also be available throughout the day.

Entry and cockpit tours are free for members of the Vulcan Restoration Trust, subject to presenting a valid membership card.

Adult tickets start at £8 and under-16s go free.

All proceeds from the Vulcan XL426 Visit the Vulcan Day will go towards the upkeep of the aircraft.

After entering the airport, directional signs will be displayed directing people to the free car park.

If the Vulcan parking space is full, visitors will need to leave their car in the airport’s short stay car park, for which there is a charge.
