A GIRL Guide leader who has dedicated more than 60 years of service to the community has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the King’s Birthday Honours list.

Westcliff’s Jacky Goddard, 77, has committed decades to Girlguiding Essex South East and is set to be recognised for her tireless work.

The 77-year-old started out as a Brownie and graduated to spend years running her own units.

To reflect her exceptional work, she has received a BEM for services to young people.

Reacting to how she felt when she found out the news, Mrs Goddard said: “I found out a month ago, and I was a bit gobsmacked as I did not expect to get the recognition.

“We had a small gathering on Sunday with people who recommended me and our friends.

“I just want to say thank you to everyone.”

Three years ago, Mrs Goddard won the gold medal at the Citizen of Southend Awards, where the judges were amazed with her commitment to girlguiding.

The award scheme, co-founded by Stockvale owner Philip Miller MBE whose portfolio includes Adventure Island and Sealife Adventure, gives people in the community the chance to nominate someone who lives, works and contributes to the city.

Speaking of her role, she said: “I just love it and that is one of the things about the association because I work in the guides and scouts, and just seeing them grow.”

Also receiving the BEM alongside Mrs Goddard is Southend Adult Community College tutor Cheryl Bertschi, from Leigh, for services to education and Essex Police’s PC and leader of the Essex Volunteer Police Cadets Steve Judd, from Hockley, for services to policing and young people.

A number residents receiving MBEs, including Canvey’s Northwick Park Trust CEO Emma Lane, from Leigh, for services to education, Benfleet’s Eileen French, founder trustee of the Essex Council of Voluntary Youth Organisations, for services to young people.

In addition, retired head of years at Southend Council Elaine Hammans, from Maldon, was honoured for services to education, and Battlesbridge’s Dr Navaratnam Partheeban, co-founder of the British Veterinary Ethnicity and Diversity Society, for services to inclusion.
