A FAMILY home has been left uninhabitable after a fire broke out in the roof of the property.

Firefighters from seven Essex County Fire and Rescue Service stations descended on Bishopsteignton, in Shoebury, at 8.59am this morning.

They worked to extinguish the fire from inside the three-storey building, while crews used an aerial ladder platform to tackle the blaze from above.

The fire was extinguished by 12pm. It was contained to the roof but due to the smoke and water damage on the second floor, the house has been left uninhabitable.

Station Manager Mark Elliot said: “Crews have worked hard to prevent the fire spreading throughout the rest of the property.

“We will remain on scene for a few hours carrying out a fire investigation and making the scene safe.”
