A MAN succumbed to his injuries a week after jumping into shallow water from a yacht in Leigh, an inquest has heard.

Thomas Warren, 27, suffered serious injuries after diving into waist-deep water on Bell Wharf Beach, on Saturday, July 8, an inquest heard on Wednesday.

Following surgery and treatment, Mr Warren died in the Royal London Hospital, ten days later.

As the inquest opened at Essex Coroner’s Office by area coroner Michelle Brown on Wednesday.

Ms Brown said: “Mr Warren dived from a yacht into what is presumed to be shallow water in Bell Wharf Beach.

“He was lifted back to the boat by friends and paramedics were called to the scene.”

An air ambulance and other emergency services arrived at the scene as Mr Warren was taken to Southend Hospital to treat his injuries.

HM Coastguard confirmed Mr Warren had been rescued by kayakers who handed him over to his friends when he was brought to shore.

Ms Brown added: “A CT trauma scan was conducted when Mr Warren arrived at Southend Hospital.

“He was subsequently transferred to Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel Road where he sadly passed away on July 18.

“The medical cause of death was ruled as brain injury and high cervical spine injury, following an operation on July 9.

“There is likely to be a documentary inquest in due course.”

James Courtenay, councillor responsible for public protection, spoke to the Echo following the incident.

He said: “I am so sorry to hear about this incident.

“Incidents like this are awful and serve as a poignant reminder to always be careful and cautious in and around the water.

“Please take care of tide times, riptides and follow any warning signs or instructions from officials to stay safe.”

HM Coastguard has offered safety advice on diving.

A spokesman for HM Coastguard said: “Changing tides and water depth, submerged items and cold water shock can cause death or life-changing injuries.

“Submerged hazards like rocks may not be visible, and water may be shallower than it seems.

“Instead, try coasteering with a registered provider. They will provide the necessary training and equipment to make the experience both safe and enjoyable.”
