A HISTORIC pub, which was branded an “eyesore” by residents, has undergone a long-awaited major revamp to give it a “new-lease of life”.
Bosses at The Spa, in Southend Road, Hockley, have unveiled the revamp in a series of pictures showing the refurbishment of the business - both on the inside and out.
The pub closed its doors to punters for two weeks at the end of July and start of August for an internal renovation, just weeks after the external work was completed.
Despite being branded an eyesore in October, owners Mitchells and Butlers have now completed works saying it “gives the pub a new lease of life”.
General manager Fergus Claydon said: “As a key part of Hockley’s nightlife we are thrilled to have given our pub a new lease of life, and we’re really excited to show guests our big changes.
“Whether you are looking for a pint with mates or somewhere to watch the sport, our pub has it covered.”
Renowned as a hub for live sport and music, the new-look Spa offers a brand-new drinks menu for visitors to enjoy in the easy-going pub.
Guests can enjoy a range of beers, wines, and an array of cocktails.
Bosses claim the pub provides “guests with the perfect spot to get together with friends, families, or colleagues to unwind with a wide selection of drinks in a welcoming atmosphere”.
Hockley resident – and regular visitor to the pub –Kirsty Lawrence, 48, said the pub is now “even more welcoming”.
She said: “The Spa is the main point as you come into the village and stands out because of its location and size.
“It is now even more welcoming because of the new outdoor and indoor décor.
“But it is not just how a pub looks. A large number of clients have been using the pub there for more than 30 years.
“It is a great meeting place for all ages, and the atmosphere has always been fantastic.
“The pub is definitely made more welcoming by the current landlord too who has been there for almost 30 years. He knows everyone by their first name, and makes conversation with people who look new or come in alone.
“It holds a lot of history”.
