The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) will be expanding across all of Greater London from August 29.

Proposed by London Mayor Sadiq Khan and Transport for London (TfL), the expansion will mean that all vehicles that do not meet emission standards will face a daily charge.

It has been a highly debated topic since the expansion was first announced in late 2022 with many people still being opposed to the ULEZ £12.50 charge.

The ULEZ is not the first driving charge in London, with the congestion and LEZ already imposed.

However, the ULEZ is the first to cover nearly all vehicles that do not meet standards seeing many unhappy, including motorcyclists.

Do motorbikes have to pay the ULEZ charge?

Much like other vehicles, motorbikes are only exempt if they meet the requirements, as the TfL states:

"Motorcycles need to meet minimum emissions standards when travelling within the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) or pay a £12.50 charge."

This includes motorcycles, mopeds, motorised tricycles and quadricycles (l-category).

What motorbikes are exempt from the ULEZ?

To be exempt from the ULEZ, you will need to meet the Euro 3 emissions standards for NOx.

You can check if your bike is exempt via the TfL website here.

Motorcyclists can also submit evidence from emissions testing by test facilities approved by TfL.

If the test is successful, the facility will send the results to TfL who will not charge you for the ULEZ.
